Business complexity is increasing. So, for an organisation to thrive the current challenges, its leaders must be able to adapt and evolve quickly enough.
The fact is that most leaders are failing that.
We can see that as a result of an IBM Global CEO Survey that found that the great majority of CEOs expect that business complexity is going to increase, and more than half doubt their ability to manage it.
Only leaders that can be considered as “conscious leaders” are the ones more adapted to the challenges of a world of unprecedented complexity and increasingly rapid change.
Because “conscious leaders” trust in a Higher calling. It’s not about them, not even about others, it’s about the Whole, about Consciousness.
This makes these types of leaders more relax and able to surrender their perspective on the world, as we talked about it in our article: Being a Conscious Leader in a VUCA world: a utopia or an emergency?
Still, this type of leader represents, only, 5% of the leaders in the WEST. According to J.G. Berger’s study that shows that only 5% of leaders have the mental and emotional capacity needed to manage a complex, systemic change and reliable generate organisational transformation.
This study shows us that conscious leaders are just a very small percentage, which is very impactful taking into account that according to Jack Zenger & Joe Folkman’s study: How Extraordinary Leaders Double Profits, good leaders extraordinary leaders double profit!
Practically, this means we need more conscious leaders who can cultivate high-impact innovation, build high-trust relationships across all stakeholders, and consciously act with deep courage.
So, how can you grow as a conscious leader?
For you to grow as a conscious leader you have to be able to unlock latent mental, emotional and relational capacities that make leaders more effective across a variety of mission-critical domains, such as improved strategic and systemic thinking, change leadership, stakeholder relationship development, and conflict management.
So we can say that “conscious leaders” are highly-strategic thinkers able to focus on big problems and opportunities, superb and inspiring communicators with excellent people skills, risk-oriented and deeply collaborative.
This goes along with Joe Folkman’s research study that points out in the article, “9 Vital Leadership Behaviors That Boost Employee Productivity – The keys to increase that leaders behaviors’ that, if improved, have the greatest impact on organisations performance are:
1. Making the Emotional Connection
2. Setting Stretch Goals
3. Having a Clear Vision
5. Developing Others
6. Being Collaborative
7. Being Innovative
8. Taking Initiative
9. Being a Champion in Change
To improve these behaviors, leaders can increase their mental and emotional capacities required to lead complex change through Vertical Learning, according to Professor Robert Kegan of Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Vertical learning is the transformation of how a leader thinks, feels, and makes sense of the world. It includes the development of both mental complexity and emotional intelligence.
Studies show that leaders like these who undergo significant vertical learning are far more likely to generate the organisational transformation required for high-impact, large-scale conscious organisations.
These individuals represent the future of leadership for Conscious Organisations.
How Conscious is your Leadership?
To help us answer this question, we start by analyzing the “Seven Transformations Leadership Model”, that was developed by Bill Torbert, based upon research by Jane Loevinger and Susanne Cook-Greuter.
This model is categorized by 8 levels of “action logic” – that is considered as the way the surroundings are interpreted and what is the reaction when the sense of power and safety is challenged.
This study reveals that 85% of leaders in the West hold one of the first four action logics. The fifth action logic (Redefining) is the fastest-growing group and roughly corresponds with Jim Collins’ Level 5 leaders from Good to Great. It makes up 10% of the leadership population.
Only 5% of leaders hold the most mature action logics – levels 6-8 (Transforming, Alchemical, and Ironic). These rare leaders offer significant insight into the future of leadership for Conscious Organisations.
What is most remarkable – and encouraging – is that leaders can transform from one “action logic” stage to another.
To lead an organization into the most mature stages of Conscious Organisations, leaders will likely need to transform their mindsets into these latest action logics (at least level 6 – Transforming).
They are the most likely of all leaders to reliably succeed in generating organisational transformations that will enable organisations to thrive in this VUCA World.
For this, they will have to develop deep mental, emotional, and relational capacities to effectively lead complex systemic change.
